Monitoring the Weather
Weather is a key component to fire. During this prescribed burn on the Dewald Waterfowl Production Area of the Sand Lake Wetland Management District in South Dakota, two firefighters measure the relative humidity, dew point, temperature, wind speed and direction, and cloud cover. These measurements help to predict what fire behavior will be like. Weather conditions are assessed before a burn is considered through a spot weather forecast from a meteorologist, and then again on-site before a fire is lit. The goal of a prescribed burn is to improve habitat in as safe a manner as possible using fire as a tool. The weather is also monitored frequently throughout the burn.
