ARTIST'S RENDITION OF THE PERSPECTIVE COLLIDER RING SECTOR SERVICE AREA. THE SUPERCOLLIDER WILL BE A 54-MILE CIRCUMFERENCE, RACE-TRACK SHAPED TUNNEL THAT IS 12 FEET IN CROSS-SECTION DIAMETER. APPROXIMATELY 10,000 SUPERCONDUCTING MAGNETS WILL FOCUS AND GUIDE TWO BEAMS OF PROTONS IN OPPOSITE DIRECTIONS AROUND THE TUNNEL. THE BEAMS WILL BE BOOSTED TO NEARLY THE SPEED OF LIGHT AND ALLOWED TO COLLIDE HEAD-ON WITH AN ENERGY OF 40 TRILLION ELECTRON VOLTS. THE COLLISIONS WILL CREATE NEW SUBATOMIC PARTICLES THAT WILL BE DETECTED AND ANALYZED. THE SUPERCOLLIDER WILL BE A UNIQUE BASIC RESEARCH TOOL FOR HIGH ENERGY PHYSICS, THE SCIENCE THAT STUDIES THE FUNDAMENTAL NATURE OF MATTER AND ENERGY.
