SCIENTISTS AT CENTER FOR BEAM PHYSICS WORKING ON A STEEPER RATE OF ELECTRON ACCELERATION. OVER THE PAST 50 YEARS, THE ACCELERATORS USED TO SMASH OPEN SUBATOMIC PARTICLES FOR EXPERIMENTS IN HIGH ENERGY PHYSICS HAVE EVOLVED INTO GIGANTIC MACHINES. THERE ARE FEW LABS THAT CAN ACCOMMODATE ENORMOUS ACCELERATORS, YET THE SCIENTIFIC DEMAND FOR SUCH MACHINES CONTINUES TO GROW. THE SOLUTION IS TO MAKE PARTICLE ACCELERATORS MORE COMPACT THROUGH A STEEPER RATE OF ACCELERATION. LBNL RESEARCHERS ARE WORKING ON THIS, USING LASER LIGHT.
