TWO STEEL BOXES ARE LOADED INTO THE TRUPACT'S STORAGE COMPARTMENT AFTER THE JULY 10, 1984 DEMONSTRATION. THE TRANSURANIC PACKAGE TRANSPORTER (TRUPACT) WAS DESIGNED TO SAFELY SHIP DEFENSE NUCLEAR WASTE MATERIALS TO STORAGE SITES AND REPOSITORIES. EACH CONTAINER IS 25 X 8 X 9 FEET AND WEIGHS ABOUT 33,000 POUNDS. A TRUPACT CONSISTS OF ONE STEEL BOX WITHIN ANOTHER, SEPARATED BY EIGHT INCHES OF RIGIDPLASTIC FOAM WHICH SERVES AS SHOCK ABSORBER AND THERMAL BAR-RIER. THE TRANSURANIC WASTE--PAPER FILTERS, RAGS, PROTECT- IVE CLOTHING, TOOLS, ETC. THAT HAVE BEEN CONTAMINATED BY SMALL AMOUNTS OF PLUTONIUM--WILL BE HELD IN 55-GALLON DRUMS,EACH UNIT CAN TRANSPORT SIX 'SIX-PACKS,' ABOUT 17,000 POUNDS. THE TRUPACTS, WHICH WILL BE CARRIED BY SEMI-TRAILERRIGS OR FLATBED RAILCARS, ARE DESIGNED TO WITHSTAND SEVERE ACCIDENT CONDITIONS. SAFETY TESTS FOR THE DESIGN INCLUDE A 30-FOOT DROP ONTO A FLAT SURFACE, A 40-INCH FREE FALL ONTO ASIX-INCH DIAMETER STEEL PIN, AND A 30-MINUTE EXPOSURE TO FIRE AT A TEMPERATURE OF AT LEAST 1,475 DEGREES.
