Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack to U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Agricultural Research Service (ARS) supervisory plant physiologist Dr. Jerry Hatfield explain the equipment to gather information on climate changes and impacts on corn and soybean plants in Iowa on Jun. 6, 2014. Eddy Covariance equipment which measures the turbulence in the air and the CO2 and H2O vapor concentrations in the atmosphere. To couple all of those signals to measure the exchange of CO2 and H2O vapor between the surface and the atmosphere. This allows researchers to track how the plants are responding to the atmospheric conditions and when they are under stress induced by dry soil conditions or excessive heat or cold. These are measured continually throughout the growing season to determine how effective the plant is at capturing CO2 and making a grain yield and how much water the plant uses during the growing season. We have a observation of these data for the past 15 years so that we can begin to see how different weather conditions affect the CO2 uptake and water release by the crop and how we can begin to develop management practices which would increase climatic resilience.
