EAST WING OF THE LABORATORY, SHOWING THE OPEN OFFICE AREAS, THE MECHANICAL AREA, AND THE HIGH BAY. THE NATIONAL SUPERCONDUCTING CYCLOTRON LABORATORY IS BEING CONSTRUCTED FOR DOE AT MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY. THE FACILITY IS BASED ON A NEW KIND OF PARTICLE ACCELERATION, THE SUPERCONDUCTING CYCLOTRON, WHICH WILL BE USED TO STUDY THE NUCLEAR REACTIONS BETWEEN 'HEAVY IONS'. USING ULTRA- COLD, SUPERCONDUCTING TECHNOLOGY FOR THE POWER COILS HAS RESULTED IN A COMPACT CYCLOTRON WITH A UNIQUELY HIGH ENERGY GAIN. THE LABORATORY IS AN EXTENSION OF AN EXISTING FACILITY AND WILL PROVIDE A SECOND-STEP SUPERCONDUCTING CYCLOTRON AND ADDITIONAL EXPERIMENTAL AREAS, BEAM TRANSPORT SYSTEMS, RADIATION SHIELDING, AND SUPPORT AREAS.
