On June 1, Doug Pocze and John Malleck of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency visited Brookhaven Lab to join the celebration marking a major milestone in decommissioning of the BGRRâthe safe and successful removal of the graphite pile. This phase, which removed 60,000 activated graphite blocks weighing a total of 700 tons, began in early February and was completed in May. It represents the most difficult part of the decommissioning process. DOE Deputy Secretary Daniel Poneman and DOE Environmental Management Recovery Act Program Director Cynthia Anderson also were present for the celebration. The visitors toured the BGRR to see the remotely operated equipment and controls used for graphite removal.
