THE DEFENSE WASTE PROCESSING FACILITY AT THE SAVANNAH RIVER SITE, SOUTH CAROLINA. ON MARCH 12, 1996 THE DWPF OFFICIALLY STARTED PROCESSING NUCLEAR WASTE. LIQUID HIGH-LEVEL RADIOACTIVE WASTE IS IMMOBILIZED IN GLASS FOR ENVIRONMENTALLY SAFE, LONG-TERM STORAGE. SAND-LIKE BOROSILICATE GLASS, CALLED 'FRIT' IS MIXED WITH THE WASTE AND SENT TO A 65 TON STEEL AND CERAMIC MELTER, WHERE THE MIXTURE IS HEATED TO NEARLY 2100 DEGREES F UNTIL MOLTEN. THE MOLTEN GLASS-WASTE MIXTURE IS POURED, IN A PENCIL THIN STREAM INTO STAINLESS STEEL CANISTERS TO COOL AND HARDEN. For more information or additional images, please contact 202-586-5251.
